Ylli Daklani: When all the leaves have been burned

für drei Stimmen

(2025)

Deep in the mountains of Kosovo, amid a variety of musical traditions, shepherds create music using tree leaves. These masters of folklore know how to produce all kinds of sounds by holding the leaf by its edges and keeping it evenly taut, then blowing air across its tip. They mimic bird calls. In my piece, the burnt leaves represent the damage caused by the war in Kosovo and its aftermath, as well as the desire for a better future. The text is taken from the opening verses of ‘Lahuta e Malcís’.
