Jennifer Walshe: Paddy Reilly Runs with the Devil

The performers should all look in slightly different directions, lost in their own world of headphones. If possible, the performers should appear without music stands.

The parts of the piece consist of six different mp3s–one for each performer. Each performer should be equipped with headphones and a device that can play mp3s (CD player, iPod, mobile phone, etc.). The performers all start their mp3s at the same time, the piece starts 10 seconds later.

Short clips of David Lee Roth singing ‘Running with the Devil’ a cappella. Each time a performer hears one of these clips, they should pause briefly (no more than half a second) after the end of the clip and then sing the exact clip they just heard, imitating DLR’s voice as closely as possible (this may require the male voices to sing in falsetto).

Long clips of the AC/DC song ‘Back in Black’. Every time a performer hears one of these clips, they should immediately start miming–playing air guitar, playing air drums or singing along with the clip as described in their part.

Long clips with wordless vocals: Each time a performer hears one of these clips, they should immediately start singing it, following it as best they can as it unfolds. When the clip ends, performers stop singing along.

Jennifer Walshe (*1974 in Dublin, Ireland) studied composition with John Maxwell Geddes at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and with Kevin Volans in Dublin. In 2002 she received her doctorate from Northwestern University, Chicago with Amnon Wolman and Michael Pisaro. In 2000 Jennifer Walshe received the Kranichstein Music Prize at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music; she was a guest of the Akademie Schloss Solitude Stuttgart, the DAAD Berlin Artists’ Program and the Fondazione Claudio Buziol. She was also composer-in-residence in South Dublin County at In Context 3 and received awards from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, New York and the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture. In addition to her work as a composer, Jennifer Walshe performs as a vocal soloist, working extensively with extended vocal techniques. She improvises and performs with artists in Europe and the USA, including Tony Conrad (until 2016), Panos Ghikas, Vivienne Dick and Drew Daniels. Gestures, visual elements, found footage and historical references play an important role in her works, in which she often takes up and comments on human or social behavior patterns. In her project Grúpat (since 2007), Jennifer Walshe appears in various alter egos and has developed compositions, installations, costumes, graphic scores, films, photographs and sculptures in this context, which have also been shown at the Chelsea Art Museum, among others. In 2010, her fourth opera The Geometry was premiered in New York. In her project Historical Documents of the Irish Avant-Garde (2015), she developed a fictional history of the musical avant-garde in Ireland. Jennifer Walshe taught at Northwestern University in Chicago (1998–2003), at Brunel University in London (2010–2018), was a DAAD guest professor at the University of the Arts Bremen (2017/18) and from 2018/19 Professor of Performance at the HMDK Stuttgart. Today, Jennifer Walshe is Professor of Composition at the University of Oxford.
