Jug Marković: #ITISTIME

For more than one year now, students and citizens in Serbia are protesting for justice, freedom, and democracy. What began as a silent demonstration has grown into one of the largest student movement in history of Europe–and it continues to expand. Sparked by a tragic accident in Novi Sad on November 1, 2024, where the collapse of a train station canopy killed 16 people, the protests rapidly became a nationwide call against corruption and for accountability of the criminal regime.

#itistime was assembled from drone footage of the huge protest in Slavija Square in Belgrade that took place on 15.03.2025. Parallel to the drone footage the two singers are singing two words in Serbian language–vreme je (eng. it is time), implying it is time for a change…

Jug Marković (b. 1987, Belgrade) is a Serbian-born Stuttgart-based composer whose work spans across contemporary acoustic and electronic music. Embracing an intuitive approach to composition Jug tends to resist strict conceptual structures, favoring instead an impulsive approach to composing. In his work, Jug is particularly interested in reimagining of historically charged musical gestures and revisiting archaic worlds. The human voice as well as electronics hold a special place in his work, and as a pianist, he often performs his own music, keeping his connection at the core of his practice.

Jug studied composition at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade further developing his craft at IRCAM Paris and HMDK Stuttgart under Prof. Marco Stroppa. He also holds a degree in archaeology from the University of Belgrade, a discipline that has profoundly shaped his relation to the archaic, the past, and influenced his views on perception of identity, time and interpretation.

Among his honors, he received the Gigaherz Production Award 2025, ISCM Young Composers Award 2019 and Stevan Mokranjac Award, Serbia’s highest recognition for composition.

Marković’s music has been performed by Ensemble Intercontemporain, Diotima Quartet, Latvian Radio Choir, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic to name a few. He has held residencies at Cité des Arts (Paris), Kuenstlerhof Schreayahn, Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon), and Snape Maltings (UK), where he worked under the mentorship of Michael Finnissy.
