Bnaya Halperin: Elephant

Chapter from Animal Stories

Performance von und mit Bnaya Halperin-Kaddari

(2023)

Elephant began as a collaborative artistic process and is an ongoing cross pollination between two artists. The resulting act of errancy, this free play of unconscious associations, is a surreal mise-en-scène that sits across genres, poetry and prose, musical theatre and experimental music. The audience accompanies its narrator as they wander together through a hospital. Real or imagined, this space becomes a place of vulnerability and memory, where the threat of the pandemic and an unnamed virus acts as a pressure point for the exploration of human and animal relationships. In this counterpoint, between an ephemeral narrator in an electronic sound environment and two bodies on stage, we begin to learn about ourselves, not quite knowing what we feel as we are moved to think about time and memory, about love and illness, and the ethics of care through listening.
