Since 1992 I have been thinking about a composition project that would use the distichs of Angelus Silesius, which the 17th century German mystic, poet and thinker collected in the six books of the Cherubine Wayfarer. It was only in 2002, through the invitation of the Neue Vocalsolisten, that my project could become a reality.
What interests and fascinates me most about Silesius’ distiches is the characteristic union of simplicity and ambiguity: the meaning is constantly fanned out within the small form of the distich (two twelve-letter verses, each with a caesura in the middle and ending in couplets), thanks to Silesius’ inexhaustible ability to vary them endlessly.
