Although there are six people on stage, only one, the performer, has control over the sounds. By means of a self-built »controller«, with which the singers’ microphones can be switched on and off, the performer controls five amplified voices. Inspired by a step sequencer (hence the name of the piece), Ricardo Eizirik gradually transforms the utterances of the human voice into seemingly electronic sounds. With what resembles a simplified piano keyboard, the mere five keys of the »controller« open up the full range of the human voice.

Carolina Eyck: VOID
Theremin player and composer Carolina Eyck has been inspired by this year’s festival motto ENTER THE VOID for her world premiere. Her piece for six singers and theremin is an experiment in space. How does a new sound emerge when we bring together voices of different natures, the human voice and the electronic voice of a theremin, in the same space? Are the boundaries between the invisible and physical worlds exposed or absorbed when the void between us collides?
